Planning Your First Trip of the Season

How to Make Sure You Leave the Dock!

Imagine you are at the dock with your family, ready to leave for that long awaited weekend away, and something is wrong with the boat! Now what?! With a little preplanning you can avoid most common problems boaters run into. Below are some simple guidelines that can help make your trip go smoother.

  • Have your boat serviced before the initial trip of the season by a certified repair center, or take the time yourself to do the manufacturers recommended service if you are capable. Spring service can be done as early as February and on the first sunny day you could be on the water!
  • Make sure there are no barnacles or growth on the bottom of the hull or running gear. Overheating can occur when there is growth on water intakes, restricting water flow, and marine growth on the bottom of the hull can prevent the boat from getting on plane and cause the propeller to cavitate. Also, the extra drag on the boat will consume more fuel.
  • Come to your boat several days prior to the trip. Check that the head is working properly and the holding tank and discharge system is functioning. Make sure the domestic water system and wash down system is working properly. Check the water pumps, running lights, and windshield wipers. Are the electronics working? Make sure your safety equipment is functional and up to date. Get fresh fuel and water.
  • Always have a backup plan in case of a breakdown, illness, or unexpected circumstances. Organizing this before you leave the dock is better than trying to figure things out in the middle of an emergency -- does anyone know where you are? Do you have a working radio? Remember cell phone don’t always work out on the water.

With a little preplanning you can relax and enjoy that weekend away, just as you had hoped to!
